FIELD TRAINING EQUIPMENT
Here are a few things you need to effectively train your dog and compete in field events. They are relatively inexpensive and will make the job a lot easier.
- Strap Buckle Collar ~ Collar should fit snugly but comfortably. Never field train your dog with a chain “choker” collar.
- Lead ~ Lead should be not more than 6 feet in length. Leather 3/8 inches wide is ideal. Leather is easier on the hands than nylon.
- Reversible Orange/Yellow Field Strap Collar ~ When dogs running in a brace, indicates which dog is listed first in the brace (top dog orange) and which dog is listed second (bottom dog yellow). Helps judges and handlers distinguish between two dogs of same breed.
- Long Line/Check Cord for training only ~ 8 to 15 feet long with a snap on the end to attach to your buckle collar. Allows the dog to range out from you but you retain control of your dog for corrections. Can make your own from supplies at Home Depot or buy ready made.
- Orange vest or shirt for you ~ Orange upper garment is required by AKC to be worn when live ammunition is in use.
- Whistle and Lanyard ~ Many people whistle train their dogs for field work. Consult a professional or get a good book that explains whistle training.
- Starters Pistol 22 caliber only, holster, 22 caliber blanks ~ Used in all levels of competition in a Hunting Test.
- Water Bottle & Holder or Camelbak Type Hydration System~ Water keeps dog’s mouth/nose area wet and helps their sense of smell. Holder allows you to carry bottle hands free.
- Kennel ~ A wire crate or kennel box are acceptable. Usage of exercise pens not recommended because dogs excited by gunshots can push through or jump over.
- Sturdy Shoes or Hiking Boots for you.
- Sun Protection & Chair ~ A hat and sunscreen for you. Make sure your dog has shade protection too.
- Tweezers ~ For cactus thorn removal.
- Leather Gloves ~ For protection of your hands against thorns and rope burn from your check cord.
- First Aid Kit.
- Snacks for you and water for your dog ~ Don’t feed your dog before or immediately after training or competing. Limit water to small amounts. This lessens the chance of stomach torsion.
