CONFORMATION TRAINING EQUIPMENT

Here are a few things you need to effectively train and show your dog in a conformation show. They are relatively inexpensive and will make the job easier.

  1. Show Collar ~ Slip collar is worn up under the chin and just behind the ears. Collar should fit over the dog’s head but have not more than four inches of play.Collar should be brown or small linked chain. A buckle collar is never worn in the ring.
  2. Show Lead ~ Shorter than your obedience lead and not longer than 36 inches.  OR Loop Lead/Collar ~ Short lead has loop at end to use as collar.
  3. Treats or Squeaky Toy - These are great ways to get your dog to look perky for the judge. They are allowed in the show ring during competition. Treats should be small, soft, and tastey.
  4. Show Towel ~ Chamois like towel removes loose hairs and dander.
  5. Pen/Kennel & Cart ~ A wire crate, exercise pen, or kennel box are acceptable. A cart comes in handy too.
  6. Sun Protection & Chair ~ A hat and sunscreen for you. Make sure your dog has shade protection too.
  7. Sturdy Shoes for you.
  8. Water ~ Give small amounts of water to your dog. Don’t feed your dog before training or competition and wait an hour afterwards. This will lessen the chance of stomach torsion.
  9. Nail Trimmer.
